VIETNAM'S ELECTRICITY SECTOR RECEIVES SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT FROM THE “PHILIPPINE ENERGY GIANT”

On August 5, 2025, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung had a meeting and working session with Mr. Daniel C. Aboitiz, Chairman and CEO of Aboitiz Power, a leading energy company in the Philippines.

During the meeting, Mr. Daniel C. Aboitiz stated that the company wanted to learn about Vietnam's priorities and directions in energy and power sector development, as well as expressed its desire to invest in the power sector in Vietnam, especially the transmission system.

"Aboitiz wishes to invest in the power sector in Vietnam, particularly the power transmission system," said Mr. Daniel C. Aboitiz. In addition, the company is also researching the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to build a maintenance system for power projects.

Aboitiz Power, established in 1988, is a leading energy company in the Philippines, belonging to the Aboitiz Group. The company currently operates nearly 50 power plants in the Philippines with a total capacity of approximately 5,000 MW, including thermal, hydroelectric, geothermal, wind, and solar power.

In Vietnam, Aboitiz Group has invested in the agricultural sector since 2014, with a system of animal feed production plants located in many localities, such as Tay Ninh, Dong Thap, and Ho Chi Minh City.

Responding to the investor, the Deputy Prime Minister stated that Vietnam is accelerating its energy transition and developing a green economy. Vietnam also aims for double-digit growth in the coming period, so the demand for electricity is very high, especially for emerging industries such as AI and big data.

Therefore, the Vietnamese Government strongly supports Aboitiz's intention to expand investment in the renewable energy sector. The Deputy Prime Minister suggested that Aboitiz Group discuss details with the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam and Vietnamese localities to find suitable wind, solar, and LNG power projects.

The Deputy Prime Minister also suggested that Aboitiz Power could research models combining renewable energy power plants with data centers; develop supporting industries to serve their projects in Vietnam and for export. In addition, he proposed that the corporation expand its investment in Vietnam in areas of strength, such as animal feed production, agricultural products, and food.

According to the revised Power Development Plan VIII, renewable energy is expected to account for approximately 28-36% of total power generation capacity by 2030, then increasing to 74-75% by 2050. Vietnam is continuing to improve its institutional framework and develop a synchronized, smart grid system to promote large-scale power projects.
