This is the information given by Mr. Jilei Hou, Senior Vice President in charge of Qualcomm's technology, at the meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung on the afternoon of April 16, 2025.
According to Mr. Jilei Hou, Qualcomm Group has researched, analyzed and wishes to build an artificial intelligence (AI) technology R&D center in Vietnam. This will be the company's third largest center in the world, after two centers in India and Ireland.
Qualcomm is a technology corporation headquartered in San Diego, California (USA). This corporation specializes in the fields of telecommunications and mobile devices.
With a fabless manufacturing model, this corporation has strengths in 5G technology and is expanding its business to the fields of semiconductor chips, software and services for industries such as artificial intelligence (AI), automobiles, computers and the Internet of Things (IoT). As of April 15, Qualcomm's capitalization reached 153.29 billion USD.
In Vietnam, Qualcomm has representative offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The company also established its first R&D Center in Southeast Asia in 2020. On April 1, the company announced the acquisition of MovianAI - a subsidiary specializing in developing generative artificial intelligence (genAI) of VinAI.
According to Mr. Jilei Hou, MovianAI brings together the best AI scientists and researchers in the world, along with a very high-quality research lab. "Through the acquisition of MovianAI, Qualcomm demonstrates its strong commitment to contributing to AI research and development as well as nurturing AI talent in Vietnam," he said.
At the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung highly appreciated Qualcomm's activities, especially initiatives that contribute to promoting innovation in Vietnam. He said that Qualcomm needs to have a specific strategy and plan to operate and develop MovianAI. From there, it will support Vietnamese experts, startups, and businesses to develop in the fields of AI, semiconductors, and connect to the global value chain.
The Deputy Prime Minister encouraged Qualcomm to take advantage of preferential policies in the fields of semiconductors and AI to expand research and development activities in Vietnam. He said that in parallel with building an R&D center, there needs to be a separate program to train the young generation to access and master AI technology early.
