The province is bounded by Yen Bai and Lao Cai provinces to the North, by Phu Tho and Hoa Binh to the East, by Dien Bien to the West and by Thanh Hoa province and Lao to the South.

Topographic:
Son La has the average altitude of 600-700m above sea level. The topography was partitions deeply by high mountain chains. 75% area of the province is mountains and plateaus which are Moc Chau plateau with 1,050m height and Na San plateau with 800m height.
Administrative units: Son La city and 10 districts: Moc Chau, Yen Chau, Mai Son, Thuan Chau, Phu Yen, Bac Yen, Muong La, Quynh Nhai Sop Cop and Song Ma.
Natural resources: Son La has the 5th largest area of natural forest out of 63 provinces. The forests here content rich genetic sources of rare animal and plant, besides that special-used forests are valuable for scientific researches like Sop Cop, Xuan Nha (Moc Chau district), Ta Xuan (Bac Yen district), Co Pia (Thuan Chau district). Travel resources: The province has great potentiality for developing natural and cultural tourism in Hang Doi (Moc Chau district), Tham Ta Toong and Thuong Thien Cave in Son La town; historical monuments like Son La prison with To Hieu peach tree, Ban Heo banian tree in Son La town, Dua Ca fort and Stone bridge in Muong La, etc.
Human resources: There are 12 ethnic groups living in Son La now. In general, their intellectual and living standards are limited. According to the statistics of the year 2009, there are 635,000 workers working in different sectors, in which 85% labor work in agricultural and forestry.
Traffic: It is quite convenient for traveling in the province with many national highways (national highways No. 6, 37, 279) running through the province; airway (from Noi Bai airport to Na San), waterway through Hoa Binh – Son La route (Ta Hoc port). There are roads connected Son La to its districts centers and to Hanoi.
Power system: The national grid reaches 11/11 district (201 communes). In 2005, Son La hydropower station was started to construct and estimated to operate the first turbine in 2012 and complete in 2015.
Water system: The province has Mai Son water supply plant with the capacity of 4,800 m3/day and the water supply plant of Son La city with the capacity of 12,000m3/day. The province also improves water supply system for towns and residential areas, center of communes. Currently, water supply and wastewater treatment projects are planned to construct in Moc Chau.
Post and Telecommunication Systems: There are microwave system in the province’s town and districts’ centers which allows telephone calling, information transmission nationwide and worldwide. All communes have telephone system. Mobile phones can be reached in the centers of districts located along national highway No. 6 by the end of 2003.
Systems Industrial Zone: The province runs 1 industrial zone which is Mai Son IZ with the total area of 150 hectares located in Muong Bang commune, Mai Son district.
