Geographical location: Bac Kan is a mountainous province located in the interior of the Notheast and bounded by Lang Son province to the East, by Tuyen Quang province to the West, by Thai Nguyen province to the South and by Cao Bang province to the North.Bac Can town is 170km from Hanoi.

Population: 296,500

Topographic: Diversified but mainly mountainous and midland features with dense river and stream system. There are many high mountains (more than 1,300m high) such as Nam KhieuThuong mountain chain, Hoa Son mountain, etc.

Administrative units: Include Bac Kan town and 7 districts: Pac Nam, Cho Don, Cho Moi, Bach Thong, Ngan Son, Na Ri, Ba Be

Natural resources: Types of soils are here diversified including yellow, red yellow and red brown feralit, etc. Bac Kan has 420,990.5 hectares of forestry, which is not only an economic strength but also of great significance in term of science and environmental protection. There are 826 species of plants including more than 300 timbers, hundreds of medical plants, more than 50 species listed in the Red Book. Human resources: There are approx. 200,000 (accounted fof 67% Bac Can’s population) employees including 6,000 College degree holders, 3,000 bachelor degree holders, approx. 100 master’s degree holders and 5 doctor degree holders working in the province. 160,025 employees are working in economic sectors

Traffic: Road is the main transportation system in Bac Can, There are The National Avenue No 3, 3B, 279, 257 and 254 passing by the province Roads from the town to communes have been improved. Bridges have been newly built. There is 1 provincial station inBac Kan town, 1 district level station in Cho Don district and 1 port in Ba Be.

Power system: Electricity source and grid mainly meet the electricity demand of economic and social development. There are one main 110kv line from Thai Nguyen to Bac Can and 1 reserved 35kv line from TuyenQuang to Bac Can town via Cho Don

Water system: Clean water production and supply is still limited. Household water is mainly exploited from drilled wells along Cau river. In the period of 2006-2010, Bac Can constructured 190 gravity water supply works and 2,463 small water supply ones.

Post and Telecommunication Systems:

Systems Industrial Zone: Bac Kan has ThanhBinh Industrial Zone with an area of 153.8 hectares built in Cho Moi District including factories producing pulp, planks and construction materials.

Bac Can continues to shift the economic structure toward increasing Industry proportion and decreasing agriculture and forestry.
